Primary and Secondary Surveys of Children and Young People

Variety of Tools out there that can help guide our practice as nurses e.g.:
o ADPU
o SBAR
o Frameworks/schemes – a plan to follow
Primary and Secondary Surveys can be carried out in a variety of locations:
o ED
o PAU
o Wards
o GP Surgery
These things become engrained in you as you gain experience (like driving a car or
riding a bike)
o Situational awareness
A Structured Approach
Things can change quickly especially in paediatric care therefore it is important to
have and follow a structured approach in nursing
Resuscitation (Immediate)
Identification of key features and initiation of emergency treatment (Focused)
Stabilisation homeostasis and system control. Transfer to definitive care
environment (detailed review)

You can use it when carry our resuscitation in an emergency circumstance outside of
a medical environment
Preparation

o Staff Training
Appropriate training is vital
o Staff Rota
Skill mix – is there sufficient and broad enough knowledge across the
shift
In several years time you are going to be the most experienced
member of staff on shift
o Environment
Appropriate equipment
Equipment is working (and present)
Presence of carers/parents
Actual
o Assemble team
o Prepare drugs, fluids, equipment, etc.
Need to know how to use it should you need to
Teamwork
Each member of the team is competent in carrying out their tasks and is aware of
the rasks of other team members

child presenting with potentially serious illness of injury is assigned a clinical
priority.”
