D1 - Compare and contrast the roles, responsibilities and skills of successful coaches from
different sports

Football and rugby

There are a few roles, responsibilities and skills of successful coaches. For example, Sir Alex
Ferguson was an innovator which in other words he was always looking for different ways to
search for new techniques whereas Eddie Jones would work on altered strategies to
enhance his team performance by executing a session that his players would enjoy. During
his time in management, Ferguson consistently examined different methods to measure and
develop his squad by going through several tactics in his training schedules, Eddie Jones on
the other hand, observed ways to alter his transition of play in order to beat his opponents
in terms of his commitment to mentality.

Sir Alex Ferguson would regularly sit and observe the performance of his players in all the
matches. He would then provide feedback and review the key areas his players need to
focus on. In addition to this, Eddie jones would also make notes and have a little section on
review, discussing about what went well and what went wrong by reflecting back on the
performance of the team. A feature they both have in common is that they explore new
methods such as; new formations, style of plays and bringing in different players in order to
achieve the highest standard.

One of the main roles they both have in common is to delegate their tasks onto their
assistants which involve training the players and improving them through several drills.
Professional conduct is also another responsibility of a coach. In all the matches, Sir Alex
Ferguson and Eddie Jones are always dressed smart; this is because they want to act like
good role models and present themselves smart in front of the audiences and the players
since they want to reflect themselves on the positive side. They have to act like an
ambassador as both of these coaches must represent their team and this can encourage the
players to put effort in and act in the same way.

Equal opportunities are also another responsibility that both of the coaches have taken into
consideration because they give a fair chance to everyone irrespective of someone’s status.
For example, coaches such as; Sir Alex Ferguson treats all his team players the same. His
players at time when he was coaching Robin Van Persie, Hernandez, Ronaldo and Tevez
were all from a wide range of nationalities. He consistently gave them the respect they
deserved by giving them advices, tips, hosting special occasions and even allowing the
players to celebrate in their free time. Likewise, Eddie Jones had coached several teams and
this included the following; Australia, South Africa and England. This shows that Eddie Jones
had worked with lots of people with different backgrounds for different teams.
