Clamp long wire
pointer mite:
2 pulley
i.
.
load (W)
table
↳ apparatus used to determine young modulus
DESCRIBE measurements, how they are used and precautions.
measure the diameter of the wire in multiple
places using a vernier calliper. calculate an average
diameter by taking a mean reading. This is to ensure
any Kinks in the wire don't effect results. Average
diameter used to calculate area = Td² of wire.
measure the load us ing a mass 4 balance and
convert into weight = mxg where 9=9. 81ms-2.
measure original length of wire using meter ruler.
measure extension of wire by looking at how far the
pointer has moved when force is applied. Using the ruler and doing
new length- original length - extension. To ensure
wire doesn't move clamp to table securely to get accurate
results. 0 = I = Weight of load . E- At = extension
area calculated original length
Young modulus = stress ÷ strain (E= E)
To minimise uncertainties in the readings plot a graph of
o vs E to calculate gradient for more accurate young
modulus reading. when unloaded the wire should return
to original length as elastic limit is not reached.
