“Every man is more than just himself; he also represents the unique, the very special and always significant and remarkable point at which the world's phenomena intersect, only once in this way and never again. That is why every man's story is important, eternal, sacred; that is why every man, as long as he lives and fulfills the will of nature, is wondrous, and worthy of every consideration” Hermann Hesse, “Demian” Dear readers, our peers and teachers, who read this diary, don’t be scared by the number of pages it contains. We know you are busy and tired and we are not meant for you to suffer while going through our long-winded reflections. Thus, we put a great effort to structure the diary in a way that you can easily navigate through and read the parts you are mostly interested in, while skimming the others. In the end of each section, there is a summary with the key points and findings learnt in the class and in group discussions. We suppose this diary to be our own “mental health pocket book” and want it to contain as much information as we might need for the future to refresh our knowledge before the mental health practice. 2 NOVEMBER. Orientation “To that one soul reading this: I know you’re tired, you’re fed up, you’re close to breaking, but there’s strength within you, even when you feel weak. Keep fighting.” Unknown ATTITUDES TOWARDS MENTAL HEALTH Mental health can be defined as ability to cope with daily routine in the given environment and circumstances considering the culture and physical health. We think that people need more education on what mental health is and what factors affect it. Mental health problems are not well discussed in the public. They should be discussed in the same way as in other health problems. Patients should not hesitate to contact the healthcare professionals in case of mental health problem. Contacting healthcare professional is a great way to address mental health problems but in some cultures, this is a taboo. At the same time, we believe that some level of anxiety and stress should not be immediately considered as a mental health problem, but rather a part of human’s life. Hard work and some level of stress should be tolerated normally as they are the vital part of human existence and evolution. The necessity of pharmacological therapy should be carefully considered. Patients with mental health disorders should be encouraged to feel that they are useful part of the society. Family members should be encouraged to support and show the acceptance to the patient condition. Mental health patients are interesting to work with, some of our groups members have friends with disorders. Approaching mental health patients might be hard. It is important not to break the trust and being natural might help a lot. It is very important that patients feel they are not refused. In our opinion, the most important is that people understand the changes in their mental state and take the proactive action to make it safe for themselves, relatives and other people. At this lesson we have learnt • Identifying the patterns of relationship with the patients • Applying holistic approach • Improving the multidisciplinary cooperation • Learning from the senior nurses' experience, collegial support • Taking care of own wellbeing • 5-finger rule to examine our own well being • The easiest approach both in mental health nursing and in multicultural nursing, is to ask patient straight away “how do you want to be treated?” LEARNING AND IMPROVING THE COMPETENCE IN MENTAL HEALTH NURSING Mental health is related to brain functionality and its chemical procedures, gaining a decent knowledge about how brain accomplishes various of mental tasks such as perception, sensation, recognition, and human learning can really help nurses to improve their competence. To further improve the competence in mental health nursing, we can learn various aspects of mental health from the case studies and articles. Further, to accumulate this valuable knowledge for the future practice and working life, we can also learn from the discussions with mental health nurses´ about their experiences and opinions. Additionally, knowledge of psychology can really help nurses to better understand patients with mental disorders. During the lesson and individual studying, we learnt more about the psychiatric nurse profession. In the beginning, most of our group members understood mental health nursing to be only about talking with patients. However, after reading articles, we understand that nurse should be well-trained to notice any small change in the patients' behavior, voice, face expression and so on. Paula Restuccia (2006) claims that hierarchy between doctor and nurse is much smaller in psychiatric departments than in other areas.
