DISEASE
The infectious diseases studied in this section are caused by pathogens that
from one human host to another. Some, like Plasmodium that causes malari
transmitted by vectors; others are transmitted through water and food or du
activity. An understanding of the biology of the pathogen and its mode of t
essential if the disease is to be controlled and ultimately prevented.
Candidates will be expected to use the knowledge gained in this section to
in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
10 .1 I N F E C T I O U S D I S E A
While many infectious diseases have been successfully controlled in some p
world, many people worldwide are still at risk of these diseases.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
C ANDIDATES SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
A. define the term disease and explain the difference between an infectiou
non-infectious disease (limited to sickle cell anaemia and lung cancer)
- Infectious diseases are diseases caused by organisms known as pathogen
sometimes called communicable diseases as they’re passed from infected t
people. Some also affect animals and are passed from animals to humans.
- Earlier, we covered non-infectious diseases of gas exchange and cardiova
such as lung cancer and COPD; these are long-term degenerative diseases
infectious diseases, as they are not caused by pathogens. Inherited or gene
