P1: Explain the range of meanings atached to Citizenshipp Diversity and the associated
terminology

P2: Discuss the key concepts associated with Diversity
The defnition of citizenship is: the position or status of being a citizen of a particular
country; the state of being vested with the rightsp privilegesp and duties of a citizen.
The defnition of diversity is: understanding that each individual is uniquep and recognizing
our individual diferences; Building alliances across diferences so that we can work together
to eradicate all forms of discrimination.

There are a range of meanings that are associated with citizenship and diversity; moralp
social or political in everyday society. Some examples would be:

Terminology:
Prejudice - a preconceived opinion or judgement of peoplep not based on reason or
experience. This could be considered as an irrational hostile attudep fear or hatred towards
a particular groupp race or religion. oor examplep in the U,p people will ofen judge other
people based their colour or religion etc. It could also be that in the public servicesp they
may also choose to discriminate towards other people; being prejudice based on their
assumptions.

Equal opportunities - treating employees and others without discriminationp regardless of
their sexp genderp disabilityp religionp racep or age. oor examplep in the police forcep their job
would be acceptable for all candidates regardless of religionp racep or age etc. - as they want
diferent members to be as representative of the community as possible. Alsop in the
ambulance servicep would also have to treat everyone no diferent from other people who
they may discriminate against; whether they like them or not because every patient has to
be dealt with and treated fairly.

Sexism - degrading the opposite sex- being prejudicep stereotypingp or discriminatingp
typically against womenp on the basis of their sex. oor examplep in the fre servicep as there
are only a small amount of womenp they are also classed as freman because the job mostly
consists of men and are the most sex-segregated professionp due to a majority being male
workers; perhaps based on believing that the men are stronger or will be more intelligent
and be able to handle difcult situations.

Homophobia - prejudice against and in fear or dislike of homosexuals and homosexuality;
showing a negative attude towards itp which could lead up to a build of hatred or violence
overtime. oor examplep in the public servicesp they arentt allowed to discriminate based on
peoplets sexual orientation and so they have to put up with it and treat everyone the same.

Equality - the state of being equalp especially in statusp rightsp and same opportunities in
society for men and women; the principle in which everyone is treated in the same way.
whether male or femalep bisexual or homosexual; itts something that shouldntt interfere
