Incorporated 3 separate uprisings:

1-11th october 1536- Lincolnshire Rising
8th October- 8th December 1536- The Pilgrimage of Grace
16th January - 10th February 1537 Sir Francis Bigod & Cumberland Rising


Religious Cromwells commissioners were dissolving smaller monasteries after the 1536 act of parliament
Causes allowed the dissolution of monastic houses with an income of £200 or less.
- These provided education, shelter, employment and poor relief.

Only attempted to restore 16 out of 55 monasteries - NOT MAIN CAUSE??

Rumors that commissioners were going to take church gold, jewels and plates

General fear of religious change

Movement adopted religious imagery, oaths and songs

Wanted heresy rooted out

End to the draining of the church's wealth

Wanted Mary I reinstated as a legitimate heir to the throne

Opposition to Statute of Uses- feudal tax on aristocratic inherited land

Fears of clergy as tithes were placed by fixed salaries

Bad harvests in 1535 and 1536 created tensions

Fear of crown as a replacement landlord

Agricultural Issues such as entry fines, border tenures, rack-renting and enclosure

Political Tension arose in September 1536 when government commissioners were sent to the county of
