Unit 9: infection prevention and control
3A.M1: Asses how transmission and contraction can be influenced by
different factors.
In health and social care, it is important to know transmission is how a disease is spread
and contraction is how an individual gets a disease (Rasheed, AT EL, 2018). The
intention of this assignment is to assess how the transmission and contraction of
diseases can be influenced by different factors.
This assignment will begin by assessing the positive and negative factors of the
susceptibility of a host and how they influence the transmission and contraction of
diseases. The first factor that the transmission and contraction can be influenced by is
susceptibility.
A positive aspect of the susceptibility of a host is their age. For example, adolescents
are less likely to contract a disease than those older. This is due to adolescents being
healthier than adults as they're more likely to engage in healthy habits like eating a
balanced diet, exercising frequently, and getting enough sleep. These habits boost their
immune system and lower their risk of contracting diseases. (Adolescent and young
adult health 2023) Further lowering the likelihood of transmitting or contracting
infections is that many young individuals receive vaccinations that can protect them
from diseases. This is because schools and colleges educate individuals into
understanding the dangers of not being vaccinated. Another positive aspect of the
susceptibility of a host is in their nutrition, as the food an individual eats can help boost
their immune system, making them less susceptible to diseases. Typically, adolescents
who eat a healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables are more likely to get the
vitamins and minerals they need to support their immune system. Lastly, a positive
aspect of the susceptibility of a host is in their lifestyle factors. This plays an important
role in reducing the risk of contracting and transmitting disease as those individuals who
don’t smoke are less likely to develop respiratory diseases or other health problems
associated with substance abuse.
Although there are positive aspects to the susceptibility of a host, there are also
negative aspects. To begin with, age can be seen as a negative factor. This is because
in adulthood, adults' immune system tends to weaken, making them more susceptible to
