Point
What is stress - Stress inoculation training is a modified form of Cognitive behavioural therapy.
inoculation training - Developed by miechaumbaum – who suggested that preventative measures against
(3 reasons) stress are needed rather than a reactive strategy to treat stress
- Use of the transactional model( which was developed by Lazarus and Folkman), as
individuals need to resources or strategies to cope with stressors (an example of
secondary appraisal)
- Highlights the importance of how a stressor is perceived, if individual view stress as a
challenge it is easier to combat.
Conceptualisation - This is where the therapist builds the client and therapists relationship by discussing
goals of completing therapy as well as noting the triggers and experience of stress
both in sessions and at home (homework, link to dysfunctional thought diary)
Skills acquisition - This is where new skills and coping strategies are taught to the client, the therapist
only teaches strategies that are relevant to the client and their stressors, for example
teaching breathing techniques and relaxation for students who are sitting exams.
Application - The coping strategies that have been taught are put into practice through a
combination of role play activities, visualisation and practice, this may occur in the
student through sitting mock exams.
Effect on both - Reduces physical symptoms such as heart rate and reducing blood pressure
psychological and - As well as psychological symptoms such as anger and social isolation
