Security

What is the UN Security Council and how did it come about?

The Security Council is the United Natonss most powerful body, with "primary responsibility for the
maintenance of internatonal peace and security." Five powerful countries sit as "permanent
members" along with ten elected members with two-year terms

How is it made up and who has the most infuence?

Made up of Nigeria, Lithuania, Jordan, Chile, Chad, New Zealand, Venezuela, Angola, Spain, Malaysia,
and then the main key players being the UK, USA, China, Russia and France.

How does the UNSC infuence events?

- Applying sanctons to countries that are deemed to be a security risk, harbouring terrorism,
threatening or invading another state or breaching human rights.
- Authorising the use of military force against a country.
- Authorising a UN peacekeeping force: troops occupy a country or religion under the UN fag
to keep the peace in confict but do not ‘take sides’.

Research and note a successful UN Security Council interventon.

The Ebola epidemic 2014-6 in West Africa has no cure or vaccine, and is easily transmited in
insanitary conditons. t has a mortality rate of 50-70%. The inital global response was slow and led
by NGO’s such as MSF, However it gathered in pace:

- The USA, France and the UK led the response in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone,
respectvely.
- n sierra Leone the uk commited 430 million, 1500 troops and 150 NHS personnel to fght
the epidemic.
- The work of NGOs and the World Health Organisaton was crucial, but so was the support of
traditonally powerful countries that can deploy signifcant assets quickly.
- By early 2016 the epidemic was over (11,300 people died).
