Urban decline in Glasgow

What was the main cause? What was its traditonal functon?

It was a major trade centre in the shipyards. It was a centre for the chemical ship yard. Changes in
the local economy. Labour from abroad was cheaper. Industrialisaton. Manufacturing jobs shut
down, textle jobs lost, caused migraton from city, redundant river side land, social housing
increased. Rebranded as an internatonal service centre. New gallery was opened to show cultural
diversity, refurbished museums, rebuilt the concert hall and made strategic investment moves.
Glasgow city centre has the largest concentraton of shops outside of London and is stll going. New
archaeological atractons along the riverside have been out in place in order to atract investment.
Created 60,000 new jobs since 1998. The night life is great and the city is lit up making it a 24hr city
furthering its internatonal reputaton as being somewhere that people want to live and work.

The gorbals was an area of social housing, populaton density was insanely high and so the gov
planned to build high rise fats to accommodate the increasing populaton. rea began to get
rundown as people lef and new people less appreciatve moved in and so those with investment
moved out making crime increase. Gorbals became a no go area. New housing built 80% privately
owned and 20% rented. ctvely involving the residents has helped the regeneraton of Glasgow.
Crime rate has fallen signifcantly as swell as unemployment. nother 1000 houses are to be built in
the next 5 years by private developers.

Glasgow harbour is the biggest regeneraton project in the uk. There is a range of housing at a
variety of prices making it appealing to all. Improving infrastructure is at the heart of the
development process. £1.2bil project. Creatng a mix used development linked to the city centre.

How would you measure whether regeneraton has been successful?

You should look at:

 Ethnic mix
 Populaton density
 Job opportunites
 Types of housing (social housing or privately owned)
 Health of populaton
 Cultural quarters.
 verage income.
