The pharynx is located at the back of your throat, but up towards the top of your mouth. It
is a space which is lined with muscles. This means that when you have chewed food and
your tongue has made it form a ball-like structure and then pushes that ball up towards the
top of your mouth. This means that the ball of food (called a bolus) encounters your soft
palate and hard palate, and then the pharynx. After this, the pharynx will send the signal to
the brain to swallow this bolus. This signal is an involuntary reflex. When the brain signal has
been confirmed, then the pharynx muscles contract, your tongue lifts up and comes into
contact with the roof of your mouth, then the epiglottis covers the glottis (a muscle at the
top of your trachea), preventing you from choking on the food you are swallowing and also
preventing it from travelling into your lungs. (Hartley J., 2016, Page 319)
