Why is important for staff to understand legislation and codes of conduct and to read the booklet?

It is important for staff to understand the legislation and codes of conduct and also to read the
booklet as disobeying one of these codes could lead to them to have a warning or be sacked by the
employer. If it was something simple like making a cup of tea, instead of taking care of a resident,
then they could be given a warning.

A more serious part of this code is that they have to respect all residents, no matter what their
religion and must never publicize a resident’s personal records; the resident may become
embarrassed or unhappy.

The carer would probably lose their job and not be able to work in the health and social care sector
again.

If, for example, Joan’s carer was abusing Joan, this would be going against the code, as it strictly tells
staff that they should ‘not treat people in a downgrading way or unfairly.

They could also be discriminating towards Rafi by serving pork for his meal even though they know
that he is Jewish and part of his religion is to not eat pork.

The code of conduct states that staff must…

Treat all service users, other staff, relatives, volunteers and visitors to the home with respect and
courtesy.
Behave honestly and with integrity.
Act with care and diligence.
Comply with all applicable UK laws, health and safety legislation, employment law legislation and
other relevant codes of conduct.
Comply with any lawful and reasonable direction given by superior or member of the home’s
management.
Maintain appropriate standards of confidentiality and data protection.
