Hardware:
For graphic images there are certain pieces of hardware and software to produce and manipulate
them. All the pieces of hardware and software work in unison to allow the making and changing of
images. Firstly, a graphics card and its features are important for the production and manipulation of
images. This is an input device that basically displays the images on screen. More expensive and
powerful graphics cards allow for higher resolutions. Some graphics cards allow for multiple screens
to be used at a time and you can even use more than one graphics card at a time if needed. This
would be used for graphic intensive gaming and probably not be needed for photo editing. Some
computers don’t even need a graphics card since they have integrated graphics. This means that it
doesn’t have its own individual memory but it uses some of the memory of the system. This is
perfectly fine for most average users but some people may need a graphics card if they are going to
run more intensive programs, like games for example.

There are two types of internal memory in a computer and both are useful for graphics. Cache is the
memory that works between the CPU and the RAM. It keeps the computer running smoothly since it
keeps information that is being used so it can be accessed more quickly. It does this by copying the
information from the main memory and stores it for later. This means it can be accessed much faster
and it good for images because it means they don’t take as long to load. This stops the processor
having to be used as much, therefore keeping the computer running smoother. RAM (Random Access
Memory) stores the memory of active applications so it can be accessed more quickly. This means
that multiple applications can be running at one time if there is enough RAM available. This allows
for multitasking which is very useful when producing and manipulating images. Having a lot of RAM
means that there will no problems with the system as it is being worked on. This is very useful for
people who want to edit photos or videos.

A fairly good processor is essential for editing images and video because it basically controls all of the
processes that goes on within the computer. The processor, also known as the CPU (Central
Processing Unit), controls how fast that the graphics card can actually run. So if you have a bad CPU,
then no matter how good your graphics card is, the graphics card will run slow because it is limited
by the performance of the CPU. For graphics, it is obvious that a good processor is needed because
you need the graphics card to be able run at its maximum possible potential. This is because if it
wasn’t able to run efficiently then images would take long amounts of time to load and change,
wasting lots of time.

Other than the parts that actually make up the computer, there are also other pieces of hardware
that are important for someone working with images. A digital camera is important for someone who
wants to take their own images and work with them. This is because they need a good camera so the
images are taken at a high resolution. Images need to be of high quality for editing purposes. A good
digital camera is not always needed but it depends on what needs to be designed. If high quality still
images need to be worked on, then a good camera would be extremely useful. However, if that is not
the case then a digital camera is not a necessity. Prices are definitely something to keep in mind
though when buying a digital camera. The prices range from about £20-£32,000 depending on the
