Learning Outcome 2: Know the purpose of managing physical and technological resources

P3 – Describe the main physical and technological resources required in the operation of a
selected organisation- JD Sports

Physical resources: A physical resource is something that exists as a physical object such as a
display cabinet or shelving to hold the products in a way to appeal to the customers. Physical
display resources are one of the main types that retail stores use. Whether a business is e-
commerce or bricks and clicks the common denominator is the stock for sale.

Buildings and facilities – Buildings and facilities play a huge role on companies that depend
on a physical interaction with customers; Businesses need buildings and facilities to operate
their company, the size of the building depends on the company’s size and growth potential.
A company that is involved in the retail industry will require larger retail outlets to allow
their customers to see a wide range of stock, this gives customers choice and confidence in
the business. A retail company will also need larger buildings in order to hold their stock to
provide a good service ie having the right item in stock.

JD sports, as a company is a great example when being able to give examples of physical and
technological resources required to operate as a retailer. The first main physical resource
required is the building and facilities in order to sell the products physically rather than just
an online store. This is used to increase the footfall of customers, with the hope that more
sales will occur by displaying more items. Customers can try the clothing on and therefore
improve JD Sport customer satisfaction, and hopefully improve the popularity of the
company by opening more and more stores around the country.
