After reading the primary source (Friedrich Engels, The Condition of the Working
Class in England, 1846) answer the following questions:
1. What according to Engels was the most important consequence of the
Industrial Revolution in England? Why?
2. What according to Engels is meant by, Capital being the all-important weapon
in the class war? Explain what this means.
3. Which other system of capital accumulation does the author compare the
living conditions of the working class in England in the mid-19th century? Why
does he make this association?
4. What according to Engels was a clear consequence of the so-called, ‘process
of social change’ on the proletariat?
5. The author refers to France, in your own words, compare the aftermath of the
Industrial Revolution in France and Germany (page 54 & 55 study guide) and
England. Are there any notable similarities? What are the differences?



1. According to Engels, the most important consequence of the Industrial Revolution in England was the
vast increase in the wealth and power of the bourgeoisie, or the capitalist class. He argues that the
bourgeoisie exploited the working class to accumulate immense wealth, leading to extreme social
inequality and a stark division between the rich and the poor.
