Cognitions and development
Cognitive development = how mental processes changes over a lifetime.
Piaget theories of cognitive development:
- Cog dev occurs by progressing through a series of invariant and universal stages
- Child is an active participant in their own development
- Focus on motivation to learn and how learning takes place (on cog basis)
- Motivation: Disequilibrium, equilibration
- How?: Assimilation, accommodation
Schema:
- Cog structure stored in memory that organises experiences – theory about the world
- Adults – have complex schema for objects, actions, ideas
- Infants – small number of inborn schema
Equilibration = process of seeking mental balance- the motivation behind dev
- New experiences lead to cog disequilibrium they don’t fit into existing schema
- Solved by adapting to the new experience by discovery learning and dev
understanding
- Adaptation = assimilation and accommodation
Assimilation = process of fitting in new experiences to an existing schema (aSSimilation –
Same Schema)
Accommodation = process of changing exiting schema or creating new schema when new
info cannot be assimilated for example a child cant assimilate a cat with a dog so will have
to create a new schema (accommodate Create or Change)
3 significant equilibration points
