DNA – Dennis Kelly Example exam questions (6 markers and
9 markers)

6 Marker:

1. You are going to play Leah She says she is ‘running away’ Give 3
suggestions of how you’d use performance skills to show Leah’s
intentions.

I would use the timing and facial expressions along with eye contact to show
Leah's intentions by making small pauses at some places whilst talking to
Phil telling us that Leah’s intention is that she really wants a reaction from
Phil. This has an effect on Leah as it tells the audience that she wants Phil to
stop her and show he cares about her. On the line ‘I mean it?’ I would have
her say it quickly with direct eye contact with Phil and using body language I
would stand right in front of him showing that she is serious and not afraid
to leave and so I would have a small pause after to again make Leah have a
moment of realisation that Phil is showing that he doesn’t care and also
won't give the reaction she wants.

9 Marker:

1. As a director, discuss how you use one of the production
elements below to bring the extract to life for your audience
(lighting)

As a director, I will use lighting to bring this extract to life as at this point in
the play they’ve found out that the police have found a man ‘committed’ a
crime. To now show the suspense and tension I will use a side light of the
characters showing that they are under pressure and also made a mistake
that can affect an innocent person along with this on the line ‘we’re
screwed’ I would have a bright red colour using a profile spot on the
characters that were the most involved giving an effect that the gang now
feel guilty about what they’ve done in their own way. The brightness would
also change depending on the character. Mark might be bright whilst Brian
might be really dark in addition to this I would have a naturalistic style to my
lighting. Lastly, I would have purple showing fear in the majority of the
characters. So by the use of this lighting, I will display their emotions in the
lighting using different colours.
