Unit 2 – P1

In this assignment I will be investigating the different business resources a company would use. The
company that I will be looking at will be McDonald's. In this section I will be focusing on Recruitment
Documentation. Recruitment is the process by which a business seeks to hire the right person for a
vacancy; and retention is how well a company holds their employees. It benefits the company as
they won’t need to spend money on training and hiring.

McDonald's need to make sure that their staff are suitable and capable of doing their jobs. This is
because if their staff are not able to do their job properly then the customers will be unhappy with
their services. Any company would be able to operate better if they have more qualified and
experienced employees. An example of how a manager would need to be capable of doing their job
would be that they would have to be able to look after staff as well as customers efficiently. They
need to keep everything in the restaurant under control and running smoothly. Without managers at
McDonald's, they would not be able to work at the rate that they do now because the managers
working there are qualified and capable of doing their job well.

Recruitment

Recruitment is the process by which a business seeks to hire the right person for a vacancy. The firm
writes a job description and person specification for the post and then advertises the vacancy in an
appropriate place.

Retention

The degree to which the current employees of a business remain with the company over a given
time period. Many staff retention policies are aimed at addressing the various needs of employees
to enhance their job satisfaction and reduce the substantial costs involved in hiring and training new
staff. http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/staff-retention.html

Methods of Recruitment

Traditional Methods

Newspapers: Newspapers are a good way to attract potential employees because lots of people read
the newspaper. Although this is a good way to employ someone, nowadays it wouldn’t be the ideal
way to get the vacancy out to people. This would be due to technology being used a lot more for the
news as well as to get the job out there to people looking for work. While putting an advertisement
on a newspaper can be useful, it also costs money to take space in a newspaper. McDonalds could
use newspapers to advertise their vacancies. This would benefit them if they advertise it in the local
newspaper because lots of people every day read it. This allows McDonalds to reach a wider range
of people who could potentially be looking for work. This would be very advantageous for
McDonalds as it can get the vacancy filled quickly but it could cost quite a bit of money due to the
newspaper charging McDonalds for the space in the newspaper.

Letters: Letters are a good, cheap way to let people know that there are vacancies available
somewhere. Although it would only be to a certain area, it would be very cheap to advertise the job
available. This draws in people looking for a job. This may be a cheap and effective way to advertise
and recruit but it can sometimes be quite time consuming. McDonalds could use letters but it would
not be as used as newer methods but if they were to use letters to advertise a vacancy it would be
