• Sudden onset of a focal neurological deficit, lasting more than 24
hours (or leading to death) due to either infarction (85%) or
haemorrhage (15%)

• Irreversible damage
• There is death of brain tissue that is supplied entirely by the occluded vessel
• Ischaemic penumbra
• Salvageable tissue surrounding the ischaemic core that some collateral blood supply
• Reduced blood flow means it will die without intervention

• Previous TIA or stroke
• HTN
• Smoking

• Carotid artery stenosis
• Dyslipidaemia
• Haemorrhagic
• Uncontrolled HTN

• History of alcohol or illicit drug abuse
• Anticoagulant use
• Family history
