Chapter Summaries
Chapter 01 - Story of the door
- Utterson & Enfield are out for a walk when they pass through a strange-looking door (the enterance to
Jekyll’s laboratory). Enfield recalls a story involving the door. In the early hours of the winter morning,
he says he saw a man trampling a young girl. He pursued the man (Hyde) and brought him back to the
scene of the crime.
- A crowd gathered and the man offered to pay the girl compensation (to avoid making a scene). This
was accepted. The man opened the door with the key and re-emerged with some money and a check.
- Utterson is fascinated and asks Enfield if he’s sure Hyde used a key to open the door. He is sure.

Chapter 02 - Search for Mr Hyde
- That evening the lawyer, Utterson, is troubled by what he has heard. He takes the will of his friend, Dr
Jekyll, from his safe. It contains a worrying instruction: in the event of Jekyll’s disappearance, all his
posessions are to go to Mr Hyde.
- Utterson decides to visit Dr Lanyon, Jekyll’s old friend. Lanyon hasn’t heard of Hyde and hasn’t seen
Jekyll for years. That night Utterson had terrible nightmares.
- He starts watching the door at all hours, and eventually sees Hyde unlocking it. Utterson is shocked by
the evil aura coming from him.
- Utterson is worried Hyde may kill Jekyll in order to benefit from the will.
