On-line discussion for week 3: Rebecca Ball
Just a quick recap of what was discussed in the lecture yesterday:
The lecture covered the wider social changes which occurred within
society between 1830 and 1939. It explored how these changes
affected family life, including:
The massive population growth during this period. However, whilst
the population was growing, fertility was also declining after 1870, so
women were having fewer children. The reasons behind this are much
debated.
The move to urban areas for the vast majority of people.
The resulting housing issues after this surge of people created
slums. Which in turn led the upper middle classes moving away from
the urban areas to the suburbs. Housing remained an issue until after
the First World War.
