• Family portrait. Middling, lower-upper sort – shows wealth, politeness and
respect.
• Henry Gothe (?) family; he is a merchant – from Edgbaston.
• More than likely ‘fake’. May not be his interior.
• Shows that he a business man, - working/serious person, but to show he is
a family man has his family. = subtle signs with hands and bodies.
• Mother is touching her tea set
• 18th cent urban Brum mansion.

2. Goffmanesque front/back stage
3. Parlour/dining room as designated spaces

How do we assess cultural meaning (account books? Diaries?
- G- act out economic etc – display for our peers. – areas in which we have the
display; the backstage were the hard work happens. – front stage; display areas,
present ourselves. The backstage, is ‘mess’ less put on. – develops in c18th.
- Beds everywhere in this period –important/cost money. –levels of privacy, and
division- shows something.
- Much more fluid. –expected to share living space.
-Cultural meaning- is important to use these types of… I.E chairs, beds etc.
- Understand what cultural goods means.
