- Stalin much open to criticism - Ryutin Affair, stops collectivisation due to critiques
- Great Turn until Kirov affair
- Kirov was close to Stalin so violent turn as his own friend threatened to overthrow
him
- Violence not used in political game prior to Kirov
- Relied on non-violent control, expels 22% memebers, Trotsky kicked out of USSR

- Trying to control party in a way he’s kept as predominant person (like Lenin) and
expected everyone to go along with him but it wasn’t the case

- Kicking out internal enemies, external saboteurs are attackes (e.g. kulaks)
