Defragmentation
It’s the process of reducing fragmentation in a computers system. It happens when a file in the Hard
Drive (HDD) is in several separate areas of the memory, so the memory space in computers isn’t
being used efficiently. Defragmentation organizes the files on the HDD. It also tries to free up space
by compressing the file and folders on it and bring the files that are stored in separate places
together.
For example if your desk was untidy, you’d tidy it so items can be found easier. That is similar to
what defragmentation does. This improves the performance of the system by allowing it to run
faster and effectively extending the amount of space on the HDD my removing fragmentations and
freeing up space.
Scan Disk
Scan Disk is a maintenance utility that is preinstalled on the windows operating systems. However,
you can get third party utility software. Scan Disk’s job is to troubleshoot a HDD problem. It checks
and repair files on a disk drive. This improves a systems performance because it allows the user to
find problems quicker and easier.
Some advantages are:
It automatically detects and repairs Hard Disk Errors, cross-linked files and lost clusters It's is
highly recommended that Scandisk is used in trouble Shooting. Not running Scan Disk once a
year could result in system crashes, and Hard
Disk Failure.
Running Scan Disk will help Hard Disk
integrity and prevent Hard Disk errors
happening.
