BT
EC Level 3 Applied/Forensic Science
Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
Learning Aim B: Undertake calorimetry to study cooling curves
Matthew Howard (9360)
March 2022

, Part A: Calibration of thermometers
Introduction:
The calibration of thermometers is very important in the cooling curve of stearic acid
experiment. This is because you want to try and get a valid result in the experiment, a
thermometer that is not calibrated right correctly can affect the results in a negative way. If
the thermometers that are tested are not perfect accurate the results that are found can be
used to work out what the results would be if a perfect thermometer was used. In my
experiment I used 2 types of thermometers, a liquid filled traditional thermometer and an
electronic Infared digital thermometer. This experiment was done using both thermometers
to investigate which thermometer gave me the most accurate readings, this was done so I
could gain valid results in the final experiment.
