Unit 2: Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team

Learning Aim A: Examine common Engineering Processes to create
products to deliver services safely and effectively as a team.

Tejuan McGann

, Scenario: My manager has asked me to examine this CCTV bracket and to report back on the
engineering processes that can be used to produce it, including health and safety factors, and how
human factors could affect the performance of these processes.

This is an aluminium bracket that goes through several
manufacturing processes, including sand casting, milling,
drilling, and tapping. Initially, the bracket is created by
sand casting it into a mold. The next step involves milling
the pockets and surfaces of the bracket. Finally, the
bracket undergoes drilling to create holes and tapping to
create threads. A total of 100 brackets are required to be
produced in this manufacturing process.

Hardware: CCTV Bracket

Material used: aluminium

I have identified four production procedures that are
used to create the bracket after conducting research:
sand casting, CNC milling, drilling, and tapping.

Sand casting is a process used to create metal objects,
including aluminium brackets, by pouring molten metal
into a sand mold. The process involves creating a pattern of
the object to be produced, which is then pressed into
sand to create a mold. The mold is then filled with molten metal, which cools and solidifies to create
the final product.

Sand casting is a popular method for producing metal objects because it is relatively simple and cost-
effective. It is commonly used in batch production for smaller quantities, such as the required 100
brackets. However, it may not be the most efficient method for high-volume production, where
more automated and specialized methods may be preferred.

Health and safety considerations are important when working with molten metal
and sand casting. Workers should wear appropriate personal protective equipment
(PPE) such as heat-resistant clothing, gloves, and safety glasses to protect against
burns and injury. Additionally, proper ventilation and respiratory protection should
be in place to protect against fumes and dust.

Human factors such as worker training and experience can also impact the quality
of sand-casting production. Proper training and supervision can ensure that
workers perform their tasks safely and effectively.
