Classification Systems

Classification systems are a method used to determine the level of quality for establishments in the
hospitality industry. These systems are used by hospitality businesses for a range of reasons such as to
attract customers. Classifications also reassure potential guests that their stay will be well spent and
worth the money they are paying. They are also used by customers as a guide on the suitability of the
establishment for them. Depending on the rating and the experience they received, customers are likely
to make repeat purchases.

Classification systems are used for many establishments within every sector of the hospitality industry.
Different people with different interests will interpret the way that a business is classified for example
potential customers will use classifications to look for the best establishment within the hospitality
sector they wish to purchase from, whereas other businesses use classifications to compete with
competitors.

There are a range of different classification systems that exist in the hospitality such as Hotel Stars,
Michelin Stars (Restaurants), Diamond Ratings (Bed & Breakfast and Budget Hotels), AA Rosettes
(Restaurants), Gault and Milau (Restaurants), Visit England – Gold and Silver (Hotels & Guest
Accommodation & Self Catering Accommodation), Egon Ronay (Restaurants).

There are also a range of different symbols that are used for each classification systems which all
represent different things, for example.

Hotel Stars = Stars

 1 - Basic accommodation, shared facilities in some cases
 2 - Basic room options, color TV and an in-house bar/restaurant.
 3 - Multiple room options, restaurant, gym facilities and conference
room/ business facilities available.
 4 - Multiple rooms/ suite options, restaurants and bars on site, business facilities, concierge
services, swimming pool, gym and crèche.
 5 - Luxury accommodation with all of the above facilities and more.

Michelin Stars = Stars

 1 – Very good cuisine in its category
 2 – Excellent cuisine, worth a detour
 3 – Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey

Diamond Ratings = Diamonds

 1 – Meet basic listing requirements, are clean and well maintained.
 2 - Noticeable enhancements in room decor and quality of furnishings.
 3 - Display a marked upgrade in physical attributes, services, and comfort.
Additional amenities, services, and facilities may be offered.
