Task 1: Describe how marketing techniques such as branding, Diversification
etc. are used to market products in two different organisations. You need to
choose one product or service from each of the organisations to carry out this
task.

For this assignment I need to describe how marketing techniques are used in two
organisations of my choice to market products. The two organisations I have chosen
are Microsoft and Apple, for Microsoft the product I chose is their Xbox one console
and for Apple I have chosen their IPhone 6.

Microsoft is a mainly software producing company, for example Microsoft Office and
Windows. However they got into building hardware in 1983 with the first Microsoft
mouse. Apple began their business with the apple 1 computer and later became one
of the world’s leading technology companies.

One Marketing technique used by Microsoft to market their Xbox one is Market
Penetration. They use this by bundling their consoles with certain games to
encourage people to buy them. By doing this they can increase the market share of
the console because they now introduce it to all of the people who wanted the game
it is bundled with. Another type of market penetration that has been used by
Microsoft is advertising. They do this in the form of television adverts, internet
adverts and outdoor advertisements like billboards.

A second marketing technique used by Microsoft is Market development; this is
when a business increases the market for an existing product. Microsoft does this by
releasing their console in different countries around the world. Although it was
released on the 22nd of November 2013 for all of the countries it was originally sold
in, North America get it first due to different time zones.

Microsoft also uses diversification, which is where a business develops a new
product to sell to a different market. An example a scenario where Microsoft would
be diversifying would be if they began to manufacture cars. This would be
diversification as the automobile industry is completely separate from the software
development industry.

Microsoft does also use product development; this is where the business sells a new
product to existing customers. Microsoft has done this by the introducing new games
and apps for the device. This is product development because the market will
increase to include anyone who is interested in the new game or app.

Another marketing technique used by Microsoft is branding, this is a design and
name used to create an image for a product. The name Xbox has been used since
2001 and is recognised globally, Xbox also have a very iconic logo that has only
changed slightly since 2001, mainly in colour. This logo is also very recognisable.
These have both been made important to the company through advertisements that
all use the same logos and brand names.
