P10:Development Of A Baby in The First Year of Life
Red Book
This is a personal child health record that new parents are given to fill in details about their child, they
can fill in details such as illness or accidents they may have. The doctor along with other professionals
will record medical details such as height and weight records. Within this nook there is a milestone
section specifically for recording the child's development process such as cognitive and emotional
development.

Physical Growth and Appearance
A newborn baby is supposed to weigh around 3.5 kg and within the first 6 months a baby's weight
doubles and then triples by 1 year. A full-term baby has an average length of 50cm and a head
circumference of 35 cm.The head is very big compared to the rest of the body, such as limbs as they are
short. At birth it equals to 25% of the length of the body but this will decrease with age.

Physical Movement and Skills
Motor skills of a new born:
-Reflexes such as swallowing and sucking,grasp,startle,walking and falling.

Motor skills at 1 month:
-Can open hand and gasp s things such as an adult's finger
-Facial expressions such as showing excitement
-Can turn from side
-Sometimes may make uncontrolled leg and arm movements

Motor skills at 3 months:
-Moving head to follow adult's movements
-Can hold objects briefly before dropping them
-Kicks legs
-Can sit back straight when held

Motor skills at 6 months
-When offered toys a baby will reach and grab them
-Explores objects by putting them in their mouth
-Uses the whole hand to pass objects from one hand to another
-Can change the angle of body and roll over
-Can lift legs into vertical position and grasp feet with hands whilst lying on their back

Motor skills at 9 months
-Uses pincer grasp to hold objects (uses fingers and thumbs)
-Imitates adults gestures
-Can sit up with a straight back unsupported
-Can stand when holding onto furniture and walk a few steps whilst being held
-Moves along floor by crawling or bottom shuffling
