The Gods
GENERAL:
Book 2: “no man can put trust in gods who are opposed to him” which like ….
“Neptune has loosened the foundations with his great trident” “Juno, cruellest of all, the first to
seize the Scaean gate” “Pallas is already sitting on top of your citadel shining” “father of the gods
himself puts heart into the Greeks”
JUNO :
Book 1: she had anger, causes hardship and suffering “can there be so much anger in the hearts of
the heavenly Gods?”, founder of Latium/Rome, she thinks no one is worshipping her “will there be
no one in the future to pray to me and lay an offering on my alters?” her attempts to “keep the king
of the Trojans away from Italy” are failing, hatred of Trojans (‘good old fashioned racism’- Mr
Norman) “the sister of Jupiter and his wife”
Book 5: sends Iris to cause mischief, the omen “cast [Juno] out of their hearts” when they realised
what was wrong. Embodiment of furor
Book 7: has power over evil things e.g furies, can control them “this was the creature Juno roused to
action” “fearsome” “pierced by bitter resentment” “thwarted” “being defeated by Aeneas” “I shall
be able to delay it” “there is enough terror and lying” urges restraint because Jupiter wouldn’t be
happy “the queen of the gods came down from the sky and struck the stubborn doors bursting the
iron bound gates of war”
Book 9: “Juno deflected it” spear away from Turnus
Book 10: “she burst out wild with rage” rhetorical questions, “why do you force me to break my
deep silence” “why do you make me speak and reopen them?” exaggerates “neither man nor god
compelled Aeneas to choose the ways of war” “why do you cause me anguish?” “humbly” appeals to
Jupiter through love, compliments and mentioning family
