P2- Describe the limitations and constraints of marketing

Introduction:

In this task, I am required to describe the marketing mix and its constraints of the following two
companies:

 Marks and Spencer’s
 McDonald’s

What is marketing mix?

The marketing mix is a business tool used in marketing and by marketers. The marketing mix is often
crucial when determining a product or brand's offer, and is often associated with the four P's:

 Price
 Product
 Promotion
 Place

Describe how the marketing mix is applied to a product or service by both McDonald’s and Marks
and Spencer’s food.

McDonald’s

The marketing mix is applied to a service from McDonald’s as they offer their customers the service
of the Drive-Thru which allows customers to drive to the restaurant and go through a series of
windows in which they placed their order and while placing the order the staff are already making
your food so by the time the customers comes to the window where they collect their food then it is
ready for them to leave. This gains them more customers because not all fast food places offer their
customers the service of a drive-thru.

Price:

Price is important. Customers draw their own mental picture of what the actual product is worth
when they know exactly what the product is. This could either be that they are thinking it is
expensive or it’s cheap. A product is more than a physical item as it communicates with the
customer. It tells the customer to buy the actual product and that it is worth it. If a product is too
low priced in fast food places such as McDonald’s is a very bad idea because the customer may feel
that quality isn’t very good and has been reduced to increase sales. It is important when deciding on
price because high quality companies price their products very high. In McDonald’s, a fillet-o-fish
meal is around £3.69 so this is telling the customer that the product is high quality because of the
actual price

Promotion:

Promotion is how McDonald’s get their sales on their products. McDonald’s do their promotions on
TV, radio, in the cinema and online. In their advertising, they have a very catchy song and this is how
they are recognised through the song that they play in their advertisements. McDonald’s make their
