Assignment 1 Unit 2
1. Preparation of a Standard Solution
Aim: Making a 250cm3, 0.05M standard solution of Na2CO3

List of equipment:
● Sodium carbonate
● Distilled water
● Spatula
● Weighing boat
● Small beaker Na
● Digital balance
● Glass stirring rod
● 250cm3 volumetric flask and stopper
● Wash bottle with deionised water

Anhydrous sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) has a molar mass of 106 g mol-1. A 0.05M
solution is made up using a 250cm3 volumetric flask. For 250cm3 of 0.05M sodium
carbonate solution, the mass required is:
106 x 0.05 x = 1.325 g

The aim was to prepare the standard solution
correctly
1.Calibrate the weighing balance that you
will be using.
2.Weigh approximately between 1.25 and
1.45g of anhydrous sodium carbonate.
3.Carefully transfer the sodium carbonate
to a large beaker, accurately and precisely
recording measurements to determine the exact mass transferred.
4.Add 150cm3 of distilled water to the beaker, stir and completely dissolve
the sodium
carbonate.
5.Carefully and accurately transfer all of
the solution to a 250cm3 volumetric flask,
and
make up the solution to 250 cm3 with more distilled water
