Essay plan – judges and the UK judiciary
Research question: To what extent could it be argued that there isn't a sufficient level of diversity
within the UK judiciary system?

Some points which will be included in the essay: judges (e.g. judicial appointments; diversity in the
judiciary; the role of lay magistrates, law making/interpreting role)

The main function of the judiciary system within the UK is to protect and to improve the law, as well
as to solve other matters within the legal system.

Over the years there has many been debates about the diversity of the judicial system. Diversity in
the judiciary system takes into account genders, age, ethnicity and etc of judges. As well as other
demographic factors such as religion and social economic background.

Including a mixture of primary and secondary research

Points against which will be used= age, gender, the background of judges, ethnicity of judges

 The judiciary system is male dominated in this society, less female judges.

Just eight out of 38 court of appeal judges and 21 out of 106 high court judges are
women 1. source found from the guardian.
 The overall percentage of female judges across the courts is 25. Found from the
guardian.
 Most judges are considered to be old or higher above the age range, not a lot of younger
judges in courts. As well as being ‘white males’ as stated by the guardian.

As at 1 April 2018, 7% of court judges were Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME).
