-He was born in c.1045 and died on the 19th May 1102.
Motivation for joining the crusade?
-In March 1098, he wrote a letter to his wife. This letter he wrote outside Antioch,
suggests spiritual motives.
-He was part of a contingent from Northern France which was led by his brother in
law Robert, Duke of Normandy.
Leadership:
-He had an early claim to be the chosen commander.
-He joined the crusade in 1101 to try to return his honour
-He was killed at the Second Battle of Ramia in 1102.

-He married Adela of Normany in 1080 and she was the daughter of William the
Conqueror.

-He tried to overthrow his brother William II, KIng of England 1087-1100.
-He was unsuccessful in 1088.

-He did this to finance his participation in the crusade.
