English story
Have you ever had to make a difficult decision?
I have, let me tell you about it…
Sullen clouds loomed in the horizon, depositing rain on the land below as the heavens
opened up. Scolding winds recklessly raged outside, and I knew it would be a gruelling
journey to school. Vulnerable leaves grasped their startled, swaying branches in fear of near
death. A dark blanket of sombre skies obstructed the smiling sun as if the world had been
engulfed by darkness. As the sky moaned, a tornado of air harassed the already demolished
area. Despite the war outside, I was still persistent to conquer the battlefield. At least a blast
of bleak, bitter weather would wake me up. Sadly, the last few nights had been arduous
evenings, revising late into the night. I was desperately trying to enhance my writing skills for
the crucial English exam today, making sure I have the best chance of getting my dream job
as an English teacher. Luckily, I hadn’t been alone, my loving, loyal dog Lola had stayed
awake with me, through it all! She’d comfort me at times of stress, nap with me when I
needed a break and cuddled me to calm me down. Without her, there was no way I would
have got all my revision done. I couldn’t thank her enough!
I anxiously made my way downstairs, Lola at my heels. My best friend Jade was being
dropped off earlier today so we wouldn’t be late. I hovered distantly, unsure of what to do,
however, the shimmer of a black bin bag caught my eye. Ever since my mom had got a full-
time job, she had given me more responsibility, including taking out the rubbish each
morning. Did she want me to go outside in this weather? Sighing, I cautiously pushed open
the front door and advanced out into the murderous wind, attacked by an acumination of
belligerent leaves. Despite my efforts of running there and back, I was now drenched and my
hair was a tangled bush. I peered around the kitchen for Lola, I felt atrocious that I hadn’t
taken her on a walk for the past three days, I just didn’t have time. Luckily, she was a small
dog, so I doubt that she minded. Suddenly, a bark from outside alerted me. Lola had
escaped…
In an instant I was sprinting down the street. This couldn’t be happening. Not here! Not now!
This was the worst possible day for her to run off. I didn’t mean to leave the door open, it
was just I hadn’t been thinking sensibly. I strained to see a glimpse of Lola’s golden fluffy tail
disappear around a corner and my heart dipped. What if I couldn’t catch her, there were so
many roads, I could only imagine the worst! Tears welled in my eyes and my breath became
shallow; I begged for myself to stay positive, but I already felt emotions catching in my
throat. The pavement blurred below me as I got a surge of adrenaline. Pushing harder, I kept
my sprint, anticipating the relief of feeling Lola’s soft, silky fur safe in my arms. I rounded the
next bend and came to an abrupt halt. A maze of streets ascended on me. I felt all my hope
abandon me. Leaving me stranded and alone. The realisation cut through me like a knife, I
had to choose. Lola or my exam. Without warning, tears of despondency cascaded down my
cheeks leaving me weak and frail. I could hold the heartbreak no longer and i fell to the floor
in a dishevelled heap as my grief poured out in a flood of uncontrollable tears. Fumbling in
my pocket for my phone I tried to dial Jade’s number with shaking hands, she was the only
person who I knew would be close by!
“Hello?”
“Jade, it…it’s me-e please c-come and help me…” Gut- wrenching sobs tore through my
chest as I desperately tried to explain what happened.
“Lo-la she ran…away!”
