Professional associations
As a sports massage practitioner, there are many professional associations available to join and
partner with. These professional associations were formed to provide help and opportunities for
their members. Each association has different requirements in order to join and become a member,
most associations include good insurance, regular continual professional development, appropriate
qualifications and well trained. There are five main associations available to a sports massage
practitioner. These five associations are:
Society of sports therapists (SST)
British association of sport rehabilitators and trainers (BASRaT)
Complementary and Natural Healthcare council (CNHC)
Sports massage association (SMA)
Federation of holistic therapists (FHT).
The Society of Sport Therapists (SST) is the main professional association for sport therapy. This
helps protect all members of the association, protecting clients and protecting the people learning
about and new to sports therapy. The SST association gives advice on everything that a sports
therapist may need. This association also monitors the sports therapist to make sure everything they
are doing, this will help reduce the chance of anything going wrong pre, during or post therapy. The
SST association also points out qualifications that might help the therapists increase their
understanding of factors around their work.
The professional standards that are stated in order to become a member of this organisation are as
follows: they must try to meet the needs of their clients while following the highest standards of
conduct of their position. Any member who is part of the SST and doesn’t follow any of the
standards may face consequences such as a terminated membership depending on how much the
therapist hasn’t followed. To join this association the therapist must meet the continual professional
development requirements, these requirements state that there are no minimum hours set but the
therapist must show evidence that they a participating and have completed continual professional
development courses/ qualifications. In all associations the member benefits are different.
In the SST, the members gain access to the British journal of sports medicine, the members also
receive discounts from places such as physique, rocktape, rehab my client and therapy expo which all
give advice and have products that will help the therapist. Another benefit of being part of the SST is
that it will make the process of getting any insurance they need easier as they could do it through
the association rather than having to do it all by themselves.
British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) is the leading professional
association for sport rehabilitators. This association also promotes to its members that improving
health is best through physical activity. This association helps guide sport rehabilitators in all aspects
of their role and responsibilities with themselves and clients. The BASRaT tries to promote both the
benefits of sports rehab and raise awareness of the profession, this could help bring clients to the
sport rehabilitator as when the association is promoting it people may search up about it and find
the sport rehab business. The professional standards necessary for a sports rehabilitator to become
a member of the BASRaT are as follows: the sports rehabilitator must have full insurance, a first aid
qualification, to become a member sports rehabilitators must also strictly follow the legislations for
managing medical reports.
