ASSIGNMENT 2 Know discriminatory practices in health and social care
Task 1 (P2, M1)
Scenario: You are working in a rehabilitation unit and have been asked to complete a follow
up report on staff training to ensure it has been implemented. You are required to
complete a table that identifies and describes the discriminatory practice that has taken
place and assess the effects on 2 service users (Mr Shah & Mr Smith). The second section
of the report describes the physical, intellectual, emotional and social effects on the 2
service users.
Using the case study complete the table by describing the discriminatory practices listed on the
table and then assessing how the clients in the case study were victims of such discriminatory
practice.
Basis of discrimination: factors, eg culture, disabilities, age, social class, gender, sexuality, health status,
family status, cognitive ability
Discriminatory practice: types, eg infringement of rights, covert or overt abuse of power, prejudice,
stereotyping, labelling, bullying, abuse
Effects: marginalisation, disempowerment, low self-esteem and self-identity, restricted opportunities,
negative behaviours such as aggression or criminality
Loss of rights: overriding individual rights, eg by the use of power and force; statutory powers
