Unit 23 assignment 3

Assignment 3- complementary therapies

CASE STUDY:
Name: Irene
Sex: Female
Occupation: Retired schoolteacher, voluntary work at charity
Partner: husband passed away 4 years ago
Family: not in contact with Family and is isolated
Comments: still misses her husband who died of cancer. Fills in time at a charity shop. Irene
misses teaching and lacks mental stimulation.
Reasons for visit: Gift voucher for Christmas from niece for a full body treatment including
a facial. A bit apprehensive although read up a bit and got prepared to give it ago. Became
tearful when talking about husband and the gap in her life. She said she looked forward to
joining him.
Medical History: tries not to bother the doctor so uses over the counter remedies for ache
and pains in her joints which is age related. Blood pressure was normal at last routine check
(6 months ago) has disturbed sleep. Has had some indigestion recently, aid reflux, but puts
down to age.
Physically observation: start of slight 'dowagers hump' and some varicosity on legs. Skin dry
and translucent with some bruising on arms (unsure of the bruising).
Desired outcome: relaxation, company and time out.

Treatment 1- Crystal therapy
The complementary therapy treatment that I recommend using to treat Irene is the use of
crystal therapy. This is because Irene's desired outcome is to feel more relaxed and time out
and I believe the crystal therapy will be able to meet her desires. This is because different
crystals and minerals that will be placed around Irene's body will help induce her to be
relaxed deeply and will also help release the stress Irene has and also will help reduce pains
and aches in her legs and joints that she has due to ageing. The crystal therapy will promote
relaxation and reduce pain and will also promote a good flow of energy balance in her
physical wellbeing which is her body which will help her feel refreshed and more energised.
The crystal therapy will last around an hour and the crystals will be used one by one on her
body while she fully clothed or in a certain pattern. The crystal will be put on the places
where Irene experience pains mostly and these will be on subtle energy vortexes that are
know as 'chakras'. The crystals that will be used have ability's to hold and give out energy
vibrations as they affect her body's electro magnetic fields of energy in bodies where then

these energy's known as aura will surround around her body which then will improve her
physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

The crystals will absorb the energy and then focus and direct or diffuse the energy into
Irene's energy field which will then make her body feel balanced and find it natural energy
and rhythm again. Certain crystals that will be picked according to Irene's problem areas will
be placed on the 7 'chakras' that are different coloured spinning wheels on the energy
pathways in the body that run up the centre of Irene's body's torso. These crystals will then
link the energy fields of Irene's aura to her emptions , organs, glands and physical body
parts. Crystals placed with the points facing away the body will move the energy away from
that areas and crystal placed with their points facing towards the problem areas will
recharge the Irene's body with light energy's.

Advantages
Advantages of using crystal therapy is that it can help treat aches and pains in Irene's body
caused by ageing. Ache and pain in the joint areas indicates that the area has over energy or
the energy is blocked. So crystals like as amethyst can be placed to move the energy away
from that area that has energy imbalance. Other advantages of using crystals such as a
yellow citrine can help uplift Irene and help her feel more positive about life. Crystals such
as rose quartz can help Irene heartache to be eased and this will help feel more positive
about life and not think about her husbands death as much. Other benefits are crystals such
as a amethyst can help Irene to stay calm and will calm her mind and things going through it
and it will also help Irene to sleep more easily and comfortably without struggling. Another
advantage is that crystal therapy has been used for many years and individuals enjoy having
crystal therapy for years for its beauty and relaxation, peace and harmony qualities that
they have in them.

Disadvantages
The disadvantages of crystal therapy has very less scientific evidence that support the
effectiveness of crystals helping to heal an individual on a medical level. Also the crystal
therapy is not regulated by law in the UK so this means anybody can practice and this can
mean therapist may not have the right training or knowledge of the treatment.

Treatment 2- Bach flower remedy
The second complementary treatment I will use to treat Irene is the Bach flower treatment.
I chose this one because Bach flower remedies have 38 flower remedies that can help to
