Law = THE ENFORCEABLE BODY OF RULES THAT GOVERN ANY SOCIETY.
'Freedom'
Durkheim argued that members of society
will give up their liberty in order to receive
protection from the state.
Role of the Police: Police, CJS
• Prevent / Investigate crime
• Maintain law and order
• Protecting public / property
Need of law:
• Maintaining order within society
• Settling disputes.
• Protecting us from harm
Law needs to reflect the public, an example of where the public disagreed
with low is the Poll Tax Riots (1990)
Although government passes the law as the police enforce
them, public perception towards the government also
faces police.
The poll tax meant that households paid tax for each individual (over 18)
and varied from the local authority to the next. It was argued that the
rich were caping, whilst lower classes were penalised.
The unfair application of the law within
society damaged public and confidence
towards the police
