INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS: consider context and management of business and its people within gobal LECTURE 1 PART B
world of work
IB: Business conducted internationally: business transactions between more than one country
Key purposes: Important implications, not least because different countries differ:

• International perspective essential employees • Legal system
• Enhance cognitive and intellectual skills and personal development • Culture
• Availability of resources
This happens in a context of globalisation

Globalisation: increasingly interconnected nature of economic, political and social life around globe

Multinational enterprise: HQ in one country but operating across national borders
"HOME" country (HQ) "HOST" countries where they do business

Across the business: draw on common pool of resources:
• Assets, patents, trademarks, information and human resources.
In both countries the firm is influenced by range forces some common while others differ:
• Competitons, suppliers, financial institutions and governments
= All this is held together by common strategic vision

WHAT DOES IB TELL US ABOUT PRODUCTS OR SERVICES?
Supply chains: network of people, organisations, resources, technologies involved in creation and sal
a product

IB: exploiting other countries working forces for their own gain

"LOW END" GLOBALISATION
= transnational flow of people + goods involving small amounts of capital and informal (sometimes
illegal) associated with developing world.
Example: Chungking Mansions
--> Tensions, due ethnicity or class, are generally muted. That the pursuit of profit
makes ethnic and religious discord no more than an
unwelcome distraction.

THE EXTENT OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Due globalisation, the growing complexity and fragmentation of production systems means consume
have little understanding of how and where products are made.

SUMMARY:
International business refers to a wider range of
economic activities with implications across the
economy and society
If we think about the products and services we consume we begin to
understand the extent of the implications of how international busine
is done and the challenges it presents
