What is an advocate?
‘Those who represent the views, needs and interests of individuals
who are unable to represent themselves.’ (OCR Textbook)
This can be professionals or family members.
An advocate cannot give their personal opinion, just the facts must
be presented to the individual requiring advocacy.

, Role of the advocate
• Patient advocacy upholding patient safety and quality care
which includes protecting patients, being patients’ voice,
provision of quality care and educating patients.
• For example, an individual is hospitalised with Parkinson’s, th
family decided with advice from the doctors not to have a
feeding tube fitted as it would just prolong the illness. They
were being his advocate as he was unable to speak as his vo
cords has also been affected by the Parkinson’s.
• A power of attorney gives an individual permission from the
family member needing care, that they can make decisions o
their behalf.
• Advocacy is acting on behalf of the person not making
decisions for that person.
