Unit 2
P2- Describe discriminatory practice in health and social care
Discriminatory practice is discriminating against an individual’s age, colour, culture,
disability, ethnicity, gender, medical condition, nationality, appearance, race, religion, sexual
identity, sexual orientation or social class. If you have been treated unfairly with any of the
lists above, you may have been discriminated against. The law The Equality Act 2010 states
that any discrimination is against the law. Examples of discriminatory practices in the health
and social care setting could be. Refusing to be provided with a service, being stopped from
providing a service, causing harm or disadvantage, behaving in a way that causes distress to
the patient and being punished by a professional because you complained about them is
discrimination. There are two types of discrimination indirect discrimination and direct
discrimination.
If any type of discrimination happens in the health and social care sector on a patient or
health care professional. It should be challenged there are three things you can do. You can
complain directly to your employer, make a claim, or report the discrimination to another
health care professional. But if the discrimination is not stopped you can contact an agency
that deals with discrimination. When you have been discriminated against, you must
document it so you remember what happened so reporting it straight after it happens so
you remember the events would be efficient. Discrimination can be anything like not
providing a vegetarian with a vegan food menu or having unequal pay between men and
women. Any care organization needs to eliminate any discrimination in the care they
provide by allowing vegans to have a menu to suit them and providing a prayer room for
individuals who want to pray.
, Age discrimination
Age discrimination is when you treated unfairly because of your age or because of your
apart of a certain age group. To discriminate against age is unlawful and should not happen.
An example of age discrimination in the health and social care sector could be. David
applied for his job as a health care assistant. He has recently turned 20. David is declined for
the job as the employer says he is too young and needs more experience although, he had
an A-level which allows him this job role. This is age discrimination because he is being
declined into the job because of his age. This should not be accepted and to solve this David
could talk to the head of the organization or go to an agency who deals with abuse. Also, if
nothing happens with the situation he could report the organization or show them the
Equality Act. Another example of age discrimination could be two people who need a heart
bypass one is an old man and one a young man. Providing the younger man with better
treatment because he will have a longer life would be discrimination to the older man. He
should be given the same chance to life as everyone else has.
Culture discrimination
An individual’s culture is formed through social interactions with people surrounding them.
Their beliefs are also formed by family and communities. Culture discrimination is when an
individual from a different culture follows the culture's rules is hated upon by other people
because of their different lifestyle and they do not respect their rights. This could be being
rude to them because they pray, how they dress or what their views are. An example of
culture discrimination could be. A health care worker is employed they are from a Muslim
background. Before the end of every shift, they do a prayer to wish the patients recovery.
The other nurses do not respect this and imitate what she does as a joke. This would be
culture discrimination as the other nurses are not respecting their differences and they are
being rude towards her. This should be reported right away to a higher member of staff.
From them, the nurses discriminating should apologize and go on a course about
discrimination to prevent it in the future. Another example of culture discrimination could
be a care worker who is Muslim providing a Muslim patient with a lot better care than
someone who is not the same religion as he or she is discrimination. This is discrimination,
as the person of a different religion should be provided as good care as everyone else no
matter their differences.
