Introduction
In this document, I will be talking about how the staff are motivated at St Edmund’s Catholic School,
and the ways in which they are monitored and managed within the business.
Theories
There are 7 theories, 3 of which are human resources and 3 of which are scientific. Firstly, I will be
looking at the human resources theories (Maslow, Herzberg, McGregor, Mayo, McClelland and
Vroom), then I will look at the scientific theories (Taylor).

MASLOW
Maslow suggests that the need of people can be organised into a hierarchical structure.

The lowest ranking of the structure is physiological (or basic) needs, these include:
- Breathing
- Food
- Water
- Sex
- Sleep
- Homeostasis
- Excretion

The second ranking is safety; this includes:
- Security of employment
- Pension
- Adequate rest periods
- Health schemes
- Protection from unfair treatment

The third ranking is social (or love/belonging, or group) needs, these include:
- Friendship
- Family
- Sexual intimacy

The fourth ranking is self-esteem; these include:
- Confidence
- Achievements
- Respect of others
- Respect by others

The final ranking is self-actualisation (or self-fulfilment), these include:
- Morality
- Creativity
- Spontaneity
- Problem solving
- Lack of prejudice
- Acceptance of facts

When looking at this hierarchical structure, I can see that this can apply to St Edmund’s and this is
because it is easy for staff to use and follow. Most staff needs are met due to the fact they can
breathe, they have food to eat, they have water to drink, they have a bed to sleep in and so forth. If
these basic needs were not met, they would not be able to move up the scale.
