Module memory

Memory is the cognitive process that allows us to encode, store, and retrieve information. There are
several diverse types of memory, including sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term
memory.

Sensory memory is the initial process of encoding information that is received through the five senses.
Sensory memory is brief and lasts only a few seconds.

Short-term memory, also known as working memory, is the ability to hold and manipulate information
for a limited time, usually around 20-30 seconds. This type of memory is used for tasks such as mental
arithmetic, reading comprehension, and following directions.

Long-term memory is the ability to store information for extended periods of time, sometimes even a
lifetime. It is divided into explicit and implicit memory. Explicit memory refers to the conscious
recollection of events, facts, and concepts, while implicit memory refers to the unconscious influence of
past experiences on current behaviour and attitudes.

The process of forming long-term memories involves three stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval.
Encoding refers to the process of taking in added information and making it meaningful. Storage refers to
the process of maintaining the encoded information in memory. Retrieval refers to the process of
accessing stored information.
The encoding and storage of memories are thought to involve the hippocampus, a region of the brain
that plays a key role in spatial navigation and memory formation.

Several factors can affect memory, including age, stress, sleep, and nutrition. Age-related memory decline
is a natural process that can occur as we get older, but it can also be caused by medical conditions such
as Alzheimer's disease. Stress and lack of sleep can interfere with memory formation and retrieval. A
healthy diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are important to maintaining cognitive function and
memory.

In summary, Memory is a complex cognitive process that allows us to encode, store, and retrieve
information. Memory can be affected by several factors, including age, stress, sleep, and nutrition.
Understanding the diverse types of memory and the processes involved in memory formation can help in
understanding and addressing memory-related issues.
