Welcome to Copt Hill
Copt Hill is an ancient burial mound, older
than Stonehenge, situated between
Houghton-le-Spring, Eppleton and Hetton-
le-Hole. The Friends of Copt Hill exist to
preserve the monument for the wider
community and to ensure that everyone has
access to it and its environment, to
investigate any history, to conserve artefacts
and to improve the site for the enjoyment of
all.

About the Copt Hill Society
Humans were essentially hunters and gatherers. They had developed the use of fire. But they did not live
settled existence, instead following herds of animals on their migrations which were their primary source o
food. Men were the hunters and responsible for the group's primary food source. Women would look after
children, and gather fruits and nuts they might come across while traveling. Caves were the primary sourc
shelter. Animal skins and furs where the only source for clothing.
The Copt Hill barrow is a prehistoric burial mound, known locally as the Seven Sisters due to the seven
trees that stand atop it. The site is listed by English Heritage as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Copt Hil
steeped in history, a haven for wildlife and treasured by the people who live, work and walk around it.
Unveiling Seven Sisters was a project co-ordinated by the ‘Friends of Copt Hill’, a local community group
formed in 2000. Their aim was to encourage local involvement and awareness of the history and heritage o
Copt Hill and to further investigate its origins.
