Cognitive behavioural therapy 1
, 💡 Key Points:
Cognitive behavioural therapy
CBT is based on the idea that how we think (cognition), how we feel
(emotion), how we act (behaviour) and what we experience physically
(bodily sensations) all interact.
When a person suffers with psychological distress, the way in which
they interpret situations can becomes biased, which in turn has a
negative impact on the actions they take.
CBT targets unhelpful coping skills, cognitions, emotions, physical
sensations and behaviours to develop more adaptive ones (DeRubeis
et al, 2019).
Historical background
CBT is a psychotherapy
Umbrella term for therapies that share theoretical basis in
behaviouristic learning theory & cognitive psychology.
Rooted in development of — behaviour therapy in early 20th
century and cognitive therapy in 1960s.
Founded by Aaron T. Beck in 1960s
Scientist practitioner model (Whitfield & Davidson, 2018).
📝 Cognitive behavioural therapy (or cognitive behaviour
therapy, CBT) is a psychotherapeutic approach that
aims to influence dysfunctional emotions, behaviours
and cognitions through a goal-oriented, systematic
procedure. CBT can be seen as an umbrella term for
therapies that share a theoretical basis in behaviouristic
learning theory and cognitive psychology, and that use
methods of change derived from these theories.
