REDUCES THICKNESS REQUIREMENTS (T ≠ P)............................................................................................................4

Strip Foundation

Characteristics:
 Load distributed along a continuous ‘strip’ of concrete, wider than
the bearing wall (to reduce pressure applied to the bearing stratum)
 Needs level ground – common strip

Construction Assembly:

1. Strip of concrete
 Placed within an open excavation
 Positioned centred under load-bearing walls

, Dimensions:

 Founding Depth
o Depth of underside of foundation, below ground level
o Determined by building loads, in combination with suitable
bearing strata and Building Regulation “Approved Documents”.
o Factors:
 Frost
-min 450mm
-600mm (better, especially in sands and chalks)
 Seasonal Movement
-Clays prone to moisture expansion/contraction within
1000mm of surface.
 Trees/Vegetation present near foundation
-Closer/Taller tree = deeper foundation
 Water Main Supply
-Requires min 750mm ground cover to avoid freezing
-If higher than 750mm, insulated pipe needed
-Should enter through wall above strip foundation to avoid
damage
