Role of the ODP Case Scenario
Assessment task: Case Study Introduction Describe the context: Introduce your patient and briefly explain why they are undergoing surgery. Discuss the purpose of the essay and guide the reader as to what to expect, refer to the learning outcomes. Discussion Describe the care they have received throughout their anaesthetic and surgical procedures. Emphasise the roles and responsibilities, of the ODP, in relation to the patient care provided and the ODPs engagement with the multi-disciplinary team. This will give you the discussion points, for analysis, in the main body of the essay. Main body The areas identified in the discussion, in relation to your patient, should be examined and analysed in relation to the literature, does the theory support practice? References/literature should be incorporated, into the essay, to support your writing/discussion. Refer to the HCPC documents; ‘Standards of Proficiency – Operating Department Practitioners’. ‘Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics (SCPE)’ and the ‘Guidance on Conduct and Ethics for Students’. From a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) perspective, what are the roles and responsibilities of the ODP? Read ‘The NHS Constitution’ booklet to get an idea of patient, staff and employee expectations. Consider the following: 1. You may have talked about ‘being able to practice safely and effectively’ (HCPC,2014) as being one of the roles of the ODP. How does the documentation you have read, collaborate this? 2. From a perioperative practice perspective, what are the roles and responsibilities of the anaesthetic, scrub and circulating Practitioners? 3. What information have you gathered from the literature, you have read, on operating department practice? 4. What other sources of information outside of these areas, have you explored? 5. Where do the ‘6Cs’ fit in? Conclusion
