Roles
Employers
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 sets out roles and responsibilities for employers. Some
of these roles and examples are:
❖ Third sector
➢ Safeguarding and promoting the health, safety, security and welfare of its
employees and all those who work on behalf of the charity
➢ Work closely with the Local Authority and other agencies to promote and
safeguard the welfare of individuals who require care and support
❖ NHS
➢ Provide a secure and healthy environment in which to work in and visit
➢ Provide staff with sufficient instruction, information and supervision to be able to
work in a safe manner
❖ Local authority
➢ Developing effective communication and consultation with employees and their
representatives on health and safety matters
➢ Preventing accidents and work related ill health
❖ Manager
➢ Develop, review and update the homes health and safety policy and procedures
➢ Maintain effective systems for recording, reporting and investigating injuries,
accidents and dangerous occurrences
❖ Headteacher
➢ Manage the schools staff, site and activities to safeguard the health, safety,
security and welfare of everyone


Employees
● Maintaining their own and others health, safety and security
● Following employers’ guidance and instruction
● Attending health and safety training
● Using equipment provided for health and safety purposes
● Reporting hazards observed in the work setting.
